Moments after Arsenal’s CEO admits that gay players would soon surface in the EPL, Amal Fashanu, the daughter of Nigerian-British footballer, John Fashanu has revealed that she knows seven footballers in the English Premier League who are gay but afraid to say so.
She says the players are afraid to come out because they are afraid of how people would react to their gayness.
Her gay uncle, Justin Fashanu, who played for Nottingham Forest killed himself in 1998 at the age of 37 years after a 17-year boy in the US claimed he sexually assaulted him, a claim the footballer denied until his death.
The only other player in the premier league to have openly come out is ex-Leeds midfielder, Robbie Brady, in 2013.
Amal told the BBC Radio 5 Live:
“I actually know myself
of seven. I will never, ever share their details.
“I’m not going to out them because I would never do that.
“You want to be honest, even to help them out, but you
just can’t do that. The football world is extremely dark.”
