Meet Ghirmay Ghebresiassie, Youngest Winner Of The New York City Marathon 2016

Young Ghirmay Ghebresiassie from Eritea has been recorded as the youngest winner of the New York City Marathon at age 19.


Ghebreslassie finished his debut in the Big Apple with a time of 2:07:51 and 62 seconds ahead of his nearest competitor, Lucas Rotich of Kenya. American Abdi Abdirahman who was placed third in the men’s division.

The last youngest winner was 22 years when he won the race.

“Nobody has won any major marathon from Eritrea,” Ghebreslassie said at the New York City Marathon Press Conference. “I’m really proud of it.”
